2004 Nurses of the Year

For 2004, there were more than 40 nominations representing 25 hospitals. Every nominee is recognized by the Foundation, with the following two nurses singled out for the distinguished title of 'Nurse of the Year.'

Kelly Kramer, RN, MSN
Certified Nurse Practitioner
University of Chicago Children's Hospital

Kelly is a pediatric nurse practitioner at University of Chicago Children's Hospital. She has been caring for pediatric oncology patients for nearly 10 years. To quote her nomination letter, a mom writes . . .

"My son has a great time with her. She has a wonderful way of seeing things. She knows how to make my son laugh. Kelly goes the extra mile. She understands what parents go through. Many times she has comforted me. If we could show it, it would be with the biggest hug for gratitude!"

Sandra Purl, RN, MS, AOCN
Clinical Nurse Specialist, Oncology Specialists, S.C.
Lutheran General Cancer Care Center in Park Ridge

Sandy is a clinical nurse specialist at Lutheran General Cancer Care Center. She has been an Oncology Nurse for 25 years. One patient wrote . . .

"Sandy becomes more than a nurse, you feel as if she is family or a friend. She is cheerful and comforting and her concern for the patient's welfare does not end with the chemo session."

In addition, Sandy's brother revealed the following.

"Our mother, who has non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, would literally not be alive today if it wasn't for our sister's persistence in getting to the cause of her back pain. Because of our Sandy's diligence, our mother is in remission!"
