2000 Nurse of the Year

Lydia Gonzalez-Ryan, RN
Lydia was a nurse practitioner on the Stem Cell Transplant team at Children’s Memorial Hospital when she was nominated. Her particular role covered the post-transplant period - from hospital release to "graduation" from the transplant unit.

“Our son Robbie was in recovery almost 300 days; much longer than the customary 100 days. We could not have found ourselves in more competent hands! Lydia guided us through those long days with patience and encouragement, meeting Robbie’s unique needs with flexibility. Her competence and intuition were invaluable in allaying our concerns, and ultimately giving us confidence in the future! Lydia was always available, convincing us that hers was not merely a job, but a lifestyle. She lent her expertise to help in all areas - be it an insurance question or a home nursing concern. What is most endearing about Lydia is that she is genuine - a person who truly understands the heart of a child, sharing laughter and hugs as part of the treatment. Lydia's extraordinary efforts have given us our ‘ordinary’ life back.”
