Perspective on CAR-T Cell Therapy

Leo I. Gordon, M.D., Professor of Medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University, was recently interviewed about Car-T cell therapy on OncLive, a website developed to “provide oncology professionals with the resources and information they need to provide the best patient care.”

The video interview addresses three questions about CAR-T cell therapy. Does it work? Is the toxicity manageable? What does it cost? CAR-T cell therapy, a process that involves removing a patient's own immune T-cells, reengineering them to recognize and fight the cancer, then infusing them back into the patient, has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for some leukemia and lymphoma patients in the last two months.

Doctor Gordon has been a panelist for several LRF Patient Education Programs. The two-minute video can be viewed on the OncLive website by clicking here.

Support the LRF on #GivingTuesday

#Giving Tuesday will take place on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 and the LRF will again participate in this global day of giving. #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday to kick off the holiday giving season and inspire people to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.

There are two ways you can help.

  1. Make sure to support the LRF on Tuesday, November 28. Donations received online only will be matched by an anonymous donor.
  2. Help spread the word by creating and posting an UNselfie and be sure to tag the LRF! Check out the photo above, then download this toolkit from the LRF website to create an UNselfie and post on your social media channels. Be sure to tag the LRF!

Together we can reach more people, fund more research, support more patients, and find a cure for all blood cancers.

Café Owner Shares Proceeds with LRF in Honor of Brother

Anna is the Owner of Cupcakes by Anna in New Philadelphia, Ohio. The LRF thanks her for sharing proceeds from a recent fundraiser she held in honor of her brother.

“About 8 months ago, Robby began his battle with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). He had a stem cell transplant but received news that the cancer came back and he would need another transplant. Fortunately, we received amazing news from MD Anderson in Texas, Robby's first transplant started working and the most recent bone marrow results came back that he was in remission! Robby and the rest of our family feel like we truly got a miracle!

I own a cafe in New Philadelphia, OH that is open for breakfast and lunch. Robby has always been supportive of my business and helps me come up with fun ideas. This past September, he asked if I would run a special for national Blood Cancer Awareness Month. His favorite is buffalo chicken so all month long we ran ‘Robby's buffalo chicken wrap’ and the profits were calculated and donated to the LRF when September ended. Robby and I both were very proud of the support our community showed.

Robby is so brave and I love my older brother so very much. We are close in age, we went to elementary, middle, and high school together. We have played sports together and supported each other through all of life's steps. He really is my other half and I'm so happy that he is healthy and on his way to recovery.

Until a loved one is battling in the world of leukemia, it is hard to imagine how tough it truly is. It's important to never get too high or too low in your emotions. I will forever be changed from watching him battle so bravely and will continue to donate to the LRF. Robby and the rest of my family want to help all those battling this disease and know that the LRF is crucial to finding a cure.“
